What Is Timber Framing?
Mortise and tenon joinery is the basis for the structure of timber frame homes, and what distinguishes it from other heavy timber or log work. At Frameworks, we handcraft dozens of these mortise and tenon joints in every timber frame home. Full-size joints are secured by hand-driven pegs.
4 Interesting Facts About Timber Frame Construction
BUILT TO LAST
Timber framing is the original ancient form of wood construction. Many timber frame structures more than 1,000 years old are still standing today. Other forms of wood construction have developed largely in the past century and have not proven their longevity as timber frames have.
ECO-FRIENDLY
Timber frame homes use less wood in construction than conventionally framed homes and are easy to recycle in the future. Their architectural versatility also makes it easy for them to endure as a home for many generations.
PRESERVATION
Our use of crooked timbers places the highest possible value on otherwise “junk” trees. Almost all of the curved timbers we use would have been burned in the forest or sold as firewood if we hadn't requested the loggers to look for and save them.
COMPARABLE
Timber frames are not necessarily more expensive than other custom homes. Some architectural designs can be more expensive if converted to timber frames, but our timber frame homes are often similar in cost to other types of new custom builds.
